Minister Will Address Delegates

The Honourable Kevin Krueger, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, has accepted an invitation to speak at the Heritage BC Annual Conference in Victoria.  Mr. Krueger will address delegates immediately following the official opening ceremonies at 9:15 am on June 4.

This is the first time since 1997 that the provincial heritage minister has spoken at a HBC conference.  Mr. Krueger’s appearance will be particularly timely since there are many questions about the provincial government’s plans for the future of heritage conservation in B.C.

Stuart Stark to Tell the Story of St. Ann’s Chapel Restoration

When the Sisters moved out of St. Ann’s Academy in the 1970's it was sold to the provincial government. For many years the future of the property, including the 1858 chapel, was uncertain, threatened with inappropriate redevelopment, even destruction.

Stuart Stark, heritage consultant for the chapel restoration, will present an illustrated talk on the history of this remarkable building and how its many historical features were restored to their former glory.

His talk will take place at the Chapel, 835 Humboldt Street, Victoria, at 7:30 PM on June 3, following the opening reception of the Heritage BC Annual Conference.  The talk is open to delegates and the general public. Admission is free.

Hands-On Experience / Travel Bursaries

Condition Surveys for Historic Structures, this year’s pre-conference workshop put on by the University of Victoria’s Cultural Resource Management Program, will include hands-on experience as participants complete a condition survey of the Store’s Building. The Provincial Capital Commission owns the building and is partnering with UVic on the workshop.  They are also providing their boardroom at the historic CPR Steamship Terminal Building (home of the Wax Museum) for the classroom part of the day.

If you are a member of a museum or other heritage organization and will be travelling to the workshop you may be eligible for a Canadian Museums Association bursary:
