HERITAGE BC UPDATE

MARCH 2012

Heritage BC Releases a Strategic Plan

Last week Heritage BC put the finishing touches on a new strategic plan to guide the organization through the next three years.  Completed with funding support from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, the plan spells out a new relationship with the provincial government.

Moving forward, Heritage BC will be a more mature and independent organization, with a strong emphasis on self-sufficiency, more a partner with than a client of the provincial government.

Heritage BC, however, still needs up-front support from the province to establish a new, permanent basis of operations, and has requested a meeting with heritage minister, Steve Thomson, to discuss the options.

PARKS CANADA

Two Months Left to Nominate Heritage Lighthouses

The opportunity for Canadians to petition for the designation of lighthouses under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act is drawing to a close. Residents of Canada may nominate any federally-owned lighthouse for designation by forwarding a petition to Parks Canada by May 29, 2012. The count of nominated lighthouses to date is over 120, about two dozen of them in BC, but retired senator Pat Carney, one of the authors of the Act, says there are still many more candidates.

Meanwhile, the Heritage Canada Foundation has an on-line petition to get the federal government to provide funds to help groups that end up taking on lighthouses deemed surplus by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. It just takes a minute to sign - please click here:

Heritage BC received 25 award nominations – a substantial increase over last year. The jury will visit as many of the projects nominated as possible, and make their decisions on May 25.  Nominators and successful nominees will be notified of the results shortly after. The Awards Committee would like to thank everyone who submitted!
