Heritage Afloat!

Communities across BC are celebrating Heritage Week! The theme, Heritage Afloat, recognizes how our lakes, rivers and ocean coastline created a complete transportation network for a resource economy. From First Nations settlement and culture, to the first European exploration, to historic shipwrecks and lighthouses, to fish canneries and floating logging camps, water is an important key to our history.

So far it's been a busy and successful week! There is lots of information on our website and our FaceBook page – here are just a few highlights:

In the Okanagan (home of the SS Sicamous) they started with a Kick Off Breakfast and events planned for every day! Displays and talks at the Kelowna Museums and the Westbank Museum, a hike, a Heritage Tea and the Central Okanagan Heritage Society AGM & Heritage Awards. In the Shuswap – a popular pie making contest and more!

In Victoria, The Maritime Museum of BC is the place to be for Heritage Week! The Saanich Centennial Library and Archives is hosting talks on the History of the Pacific Coast and Captain J.C. Voss & His Venturesome Voyages. In lively Ladysmith, once known as Oyster Harbour, there are activities on land and on the water this Saturday.

In Delta, everyone is welcome Feb 23 at the Cammidge House. New Westminster Public Library has an intriguing art exhibit. View historic photos, waterways maps and more at The City of Burnaby website. In Steveston, Richmond there are tours of the SS Masters, Britannia Shipyards, 'Ryoshi: Nikkei Fishermen of the West Coast' at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and more!

Heritage BC is on Facebook with all kinds of stories and links including pictures of more steamboats, ferries, tugboats, canneries, regattas, shipwrecks, First Nations canoes, naval history, and even a seal or two.

Check out the Vancouver Heritage Foundation Trivia Contest, the BC's Historic Places series, and Haunted British Columbia. Join the fun on Facebook for great heritage community sharing!
