The Saanich Heritage Website

The Municipality of Saanich

Newly online, the “Saanich Heritage” website links to Municipal Archives, Heritage Management and Action Plans, and a full, online copy of the 2008 Heritage Register.

Visitors can readily link to the Arts, Cultural and Heritage Committee and the Saanich Heritage Foundation.  Also found on the website is Saanich Heritage Structures, a full listing of heritage sites within the Municipality, including 52 sites new to the Heritage Register, bringing the total to 296. The sites are sorted by neighbourhood and provide historical and geographical context. Included at the beginning of each neighbourhood section is a touring map of the heritage structures.  Sites are all fully indexed and cross referenced. Each listing provides a current or historical photograph, and information regarding the architectural significance of the structures as well as the historical significance of the builders and owners. The new listings benefit from the painstaking efforts of the research staff to comb through building permits, city directories, census results, and records of births, deaths and marriages.

Fully downloadable and printable walking tours through two of Saanich’s historic neighbourhoods are also available on the site.

Other links include “Life in Saanich”, interviews with school students and elderly residents of Saanich in 2000, and the Saanich Archives with 3,000 fully accessible historic photographs.  The visitor can also access the Saanich GPS mapping system which shows the location of all registered and designated properties within the Municipality.
