HERITAGE BC
About the Annual Conference
Heritage BC organizes an annual conference every June with a focus on a different heritage theme. It offers a great opportunity to hear stimulating keynote speakers, participate in workshops, raise community issues in an open mike forum and attend the Annual General Meeting. Held in a different city every year, the annual conference also includes guided tours to explore the important heritage sites of the host community. Recent achievements across the province are recognized at the Annual Awards ceremony and banquet.

VICTORIA 2010
Values in Action:
Reconsidering the
Values-based Approach
to Heritage Conservation
Statements of Significance, Standards and Guidelines – the Historic Places
Initiative, launched in 2001, has for a decade shaped and re-shaped the way
we think about heritage conservation. Centered on what is often called the
values-based approach, this new heritage conservation philosophy has radically shifted the focus from architecture to a broader range of historic resources, from experts to the community at large, from restoration to conservation.
But how much have things changed where it really counts – on the street? What drives heritage projects today? What values, and whose, are at the
bottom of the daily decisions that determine the fate of our irreplaceable
heritage resources?
These are just some of the ideas discussed at our recent conference in Victoria. Thank you to all the speakers, tour guides, participants and organizers for helping to making this year's event so interesting. We look forward to next year!
