BC Parks is looking for an Indigenous Relations Advisor to support and lead complex work that is both vital to protecting BC’s park system and to advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
BC Parks is entrusted with promoting and guiding the effective management, conservation and protection of the natural, recreational and cultural heritage values in the province’s protected areas system; one of the largest systems in North America. The BC protected areas system is comprised of over 1,000 parks and protected areas, just over 14.4% of the provincial land base, and is the cornerstone of biodiversity protection in the province.
The Indigenous Relations Advisor provides expert advice and leadership on policies and procedures relating to Indigenous relations and Parks and Protected Areas planning and management. Candidates will be required to plan, research and review policies to meet governments’ strategic priorities with respect to First Nations relations and Parks and Protected Areas’ management. In collaboration with provincial natural resource sector agencies, the Indigenous Relations Advisor will develop policy to meet government’s broader strategic priorities, including the development of policies and procedures related to how the Ministry may meet future legal obligations pertaining to Aboriginal interests, Aboriginal rights, and treaty rights. This position may act as Ministry representative in discussions with First Nations political organizations, stakeholders, both federal and provincial government agencies, and with the general public.
