About the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark:

Located along the eastern slopes of the beautiful Hart Ranges of the Rocky Mountains, the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark was established in 2014 as North America’s second UNESCO Global Geopark. At the same level of designation with UNESCO World Heritage Sites and UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, Global Geoparks are bottom-up initiatives celebrating internationally significant geological sites and landscapes. In Tumbler Ridge, the incredible natural and cultural heritages are celebrated by the local, national and international community. The Opportunity:

This is a dynamic position in an established non-profit society. The role of the Executive Director is to manage the day to day business associated with the fulfillment of the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark’s (TRUGG) certification requirements and the advancement of its public profile amongst a global audience.  The Executive Director will reside in the community of Tumbler Ridge for the duration of their tenure.

Duties:

Under the direction of the Board of Directors the Executive Director will:

  • Coordinate the fulfillment of activities defined by the TRUGG Five Year Strategic Plan or other strategic plans adopted by the Board of Directors;
  • Ensure that the TRUGG fulfills and adheres to UNESCO’s Global Geopark certification criteria;
  • Develop and oversee an annual budget;
  • Research, identify and apply to funding sources to advance the TRUGG’s objectives;
  • Actively recruit additional partners to the TRUGG;
  • Attend meetings, conferences and public outreach events on behalf of the TRUGG, including those taking place at national and international venues;
  • Coordinate community and public outreach to advance the profile of the TRUGG and to build strong relationships for mutual benefit;
  • Coordinate the advancement of educational initiatives related to the TRUGG, including working with educational institutions on a local to global scale;
  • Work with the Canadian Geoparks Network (CGN) and other UNESCO Global Geoparks to promote the advancement of the Global Geopark Network;
  • Liaise with the District of Tumbler Ridge Economic Development Department, the Tumbler Ridge Museum Foundation, the Tumbler Ridge Chamber of Commerce, Northern BC Tourism and other organizations with a similar mandate to coordinate the advancement of the local tourism industry.

Education and Experience:

To be considered for the position, the information provided in your resume should clearly identify how you meet the following criteria:

  • A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study or an acceptable combination of relevant education, considerable job-related training and/or experience is required. A background in the earth sciences, cultural or natural heritage is an asset;
  • Leadership experience at the Executive Director or senior executive level in a complex field with proactive, proven experience in handling sensitive issues;
  • Experience in national and international outreach initiatives;
  • Experience in revenue generation and establishing collaborative relationships;
  • Experience in establishing and implementing strategic vision and change management at senior levels;
  • Experience in reporting to /or serving a board;
  • A proven track record of implementing board strategic direction;
  • Experience in dealing with government, preferably with all levels of government officials, would be considered an asset;
  • Experience in implementing project-based heritage programs would be considered an asset; and
  • Experience in senior position managing a public or private natural or cultural heritage organization would be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The candidates for this position will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Knowledge of United Nations and UNESCO initiatives, such as the Sustainable Development Goals, or the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
  • Knowledge of the current challenges and opportunities for Canadian cultural institutions;
  • Financial literacy and knowledge of sound governance and management of principles and practices;
  • Knowledge of the cultural, patrimonial and/or recreational tourism sectors would be considered an asset;
  • Ability to provide corporate vision, leadership and implementation of board strategic direction needed to ensure the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark is able to carry out its mandate and achieve its objectives;
  • Ability to identify, analyze and define priorities and strategies;
  • Ability to spearhead regional, national and international outreach initiatives and actively market and promote the Geopark’s brand to audiences across Canada and abroad;
  • Ability to focus the energies and talents of the employees of the Geopark and motivate them to achieve organizational objectives;
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with the Board of Directors, Local and Regional Government representatives, the Secretary General of the Canadian Commission of UNESCO and their office, the Global Geoparks Network Executive Board, and the Geopark’s other key stakeholders and partners; and
  • Superior communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to manage communications with a variety of stakeholders.

This picturesque community of 2,500 people was designed and built in 1981 with a vision to create a fully supported dynamic community for mining opportunities. Now diversified beyond coal to wind energy and tourism, Tumbler Ridge is the wilderness getaway for the Peace Region of BC and Alberta, with a broad network of hiking trails, the construction of world class mountain biking trails, and a well-established boating and snowmobiling community. It has won awards for municipal innovation and green energy and is recognized as a friendly, active place for the adventurous spirit.
