Welcome to the Canadians of South Asian Heritages Cultural Map

This map was a community-sourced project that features 26 unique sites. All of the sites on the map were nominated through the Province of British Columbia’s “South Asian Canadian Historic Places Recognition Project”. They were selected by community and sector experts for their importance to Canadians of South Asian heritages and contributions to the history and development of the province. Together, the sites will help tell the stories of Canadians of South Asian Heritages across the province and give insight into significant moments in BC’s history.

Although the map was initially intended to represent a diversity of South Asian cultures, currently all sites here are specifically important to Punjabi Sikh history in British Columbia. Community feedback has made clear that references to “South Asians” as a monolithic cultural group do not adequately reflect the pluralities and differences between groups contained under this umbrella term. While the map title and overview pages have been edited to no longer use the term in this way, individual site descriptions still use the descriptor at this time.
