Unique to Chinatowns, historic Chinese clan societies have served as important hubs for Chinese immigrants, providing vital services, political advocacy and social and cultural connection. Join Chinatown Generations Society at the Wong’s Benevolent Association for a fun afternoon learning how to play mahjong, a popular game of colourful tiles played in pasttimes in these heritage buildings and can be heard from the street for the past 100+ years. At 3:00PM, the Wong’s Benevolent Association will conduct a tour of the building which includes the revived Mon Keang Chinese School, the pristine 4th floor Asscociation meeting hall and impressive community archive room donning dozens of photographs and artifacts.
A 4:00PM tour to be added based on demand. Tours are first-come, first-served. Please note that the Wong’s Benevolent Association building is not accessible. Participation requires climbing multiple flights of stairs.
The Hot+Noisy Chinatown Mahjong Socials and Saturday Cantonese School at Mon Keang programs were awarded Honor and Outstanding Achievement in the field of Education, Awareness and Communication in 2020 by Heritage BC.
