Breaking Barriers: Why People with Interest Do Not Visit – And What to Do About It

Thursday, May 6, 2021
10:00am – 11:00am

Research shows nearly 20% of Canadians have an interest in visiting museums and historic sites but have not attended any in the last two years or more. The first step to motivating attendance is understanding what keeps interested audiences from visiting and working to remove those barriers. In this session, learn about the most frequently cited barriers to visitation in British Columbia in our pandemic-impacted world from Colleen Dilenschneider and Jim Hekkers of the market research and predictive technology firm IMPACTS Experience.

Presented with:
Colleen Dilenschneider, Know Your Own Bone and Chief Market Engagement Officer, IMPACTS Experience
Jim Hekkers, IMPACTS Experience

Maintaining Respectful Workplaces

Thursday, May 6, 2021
1:00pm – 4:30pm

Created by the Cultural Human Resources Council with cultural leaders across Canada (including from Indigenous, culturally diverse and official language minority communities), Maintaining Respectful Workplaces is a national effort to build a culture of fairness, dignity and respect.

Supporting efforts to address all kinds of harassment, the Maintaining Respectful Workplaces workshop explores how to best deal with harassment situations through:

  • Discussions of what IS and IS NOT a respectful workplace;
  • A review of situations and scenarios to identify how to create and sustain a respectful workplace; and
  • An in-depth consideration of the roles of both employers and artists and cultural workers in establishing and maintaining a respectful workplace.

The workshop will discuss and define harassment, workplace behaviours and Provincial legislation. Discussions will bring forth better awareness on the subject and provide resources to support optimal work environments.

Presented with Grégoire Gagnon, Executive Director, Cultural Human Resources Council

Gaining Community and Political Buy-In

Friday, May 7, 2021
10:00am – 11:00am

What do you do when your next great project/idea gains no traction? How do you improve understanding and support from local organizations, government, and your community at large? How do you argue a case for new infrastructure and space that will support creatives?

Improving community and political awareness and support are probably more important now than at any other time. Join Amanda Shatzko, an elected politician and arts and culture nonprofit leader who works at the intersection of business, government, and society, as she explores a case study from an Okanagan Cultural Centre referendum and discusses important information that funding and policy decision-makers want to hear.

Amanda will provide hand-outs full of resources and actionable steps to help our projects attract the support your feel they deserve.

Presented with Amanda Shatzko, Vice-Chair, Electoral Area “C”, Director, Regional District of the North Okanagan, BC

Going forward: Connections and Engagement in the Virtual World

Friday, May 7, 2021
1:00pm – 2:30pm

The pandemic set off an extraordinary rush to move exhibitions, programs, and other activities online as much of our lives turned digital overnight.

This workshop provides us with an opportunity to catch up and look at what the effects of these emergency efforts have been. We’ll engage with participants on what has worked well and what lessons have been learned. And, we will share new research Heritage BC in collaboration with BC Museums Association has undertaken on how to deliver effective online activities and events.

Then we look toward what we can expect from post-pandemic life. What are the new digital opportunities that heritage organizations, cultural centres and museums should consider strategically and tactically now? How do we best use digital tools to market physical exhibits and programs, and to share them with a digital public? How do we navigate the realities of digital being both global and intensely local while most of our organizations were designed to serve a local physical audience and community?

This will be a lively conversation of sharing research, real-world examples and drawing on participants’ own experiences.

Presenter:

  • Inga Petri, CAIP, Strategic Moves
  • Janna Swales, Executive Director at Yukon Transportation Museum

As an organization of provincial scope, Heritage BC recognizes that its members, and the local history and heritage they seek to preserve, occupy the lands and territories of B.C.’s Indigenous peoples. Heritage BC asks its members and everyone working in the heritage sector to reflect on the places where they reside and work, and to respect the diversity of cultures and experiences that form the richness of our provincial heritage.
