  • The Heritage BC Watch List

Watch List: Introduction

The Heritage BC Watch List draws attention to a variety of at-risk places that are highly significant to the historic and cultural fabric of British Columbia.

The Watch List identifies sites that are currently affected by threat of inappropriate alterations, neglect or demolition. These places contribute to the identity and story of community and place, as well as the legacy of British Columbia. The listed sites represent broad categories of threatened heritage, and many other historic places face similar threats.

Through the Watch List, Heritage BC aims to stimulate awareness and conversation, foster protection and engagement, and encourage advocacy for improved stewardship.

About the Process

Nominations for the Watch List can be made throughout the year.

Nominations are reviewed by a peer jury. The decision to include a site is based on submitted materials, professional and personal insights of the jury members, and additional research.

While reviewing the conditions facing each submission, the jury will also consider the site’s ability to represent broader issues on a provincial level. These can include industrial heritage, churches, schools, built heritage in park settings, and cultural landscapes.

The Watch List is not a permanent designation and inclusion does not reflect poor supervision or stewardship.

About Heritage

Heritage BC recognizes heritage as a “broad concept and includes the natural as well as the cultural environment. It encompasses landscapes, historic places, sites and built environments, as well as biodiversity, collections, past and continuing cultural practices, knowledge and living experiences.” (ICOMOS)

As an organization of provincial scope, Heritage BC recognizes that its members, and the local history and heritage they seek to preserve, occupy the lands and territories of B.C.’s Indigenous peoples. Heritage BC asks its members and everyone working in the heritage sector to reflect on the places where they reside and work, and to respect the diversity of cultures and experiences that form the richness of our provincial heritage.
