DESCRIPTION:Description of program:  \nGather the family and explore how the contributions of many different peoples have shaped the food we eat today. Burnaby’s food culture has changed over time. This guided tour celebrates food as a form of heritage; touching on Indigenous food systems\, early settlement & farming to urbanization and how immigration led to change and adaptation of food practices. Celebrate Family Day and BC Heritage Week at the Burnaby Village Museum. Although the full museum site\, cafe & carousel will not be open\, come and explore the museum on aa fascinating\, guided tour\, and experience how food brings us together. Family friendly activities & crafts are planned. \nRecommendation & notices:  \nFamilies. Recommended for children over 5 years. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The tour will take place outdoors as well as in several indoor & covered spaces. \nTimes:  \n10am – 11:30am\, 12pm-1:30pm & 2pm-3:30pm. \nPlease arrive at the museum’s main entrance off Canada Way and Deer Lake ave.\, at least 10 min before the program is set to begin. DESCRIPTION:Join the Richmond Heritage Commission in celebrating BC ‘s Heritage Week\, February 16-22\, by connecting to Richmond’s past and exploring the many layers and unique stories of Richmond. This year’s theme of Stir the Pot celebrates the connections of food and heritage. \nStop by the Commission’s interactive exhibition at the Richmond Children’s Arts Festival to discover local history and heritage through displays and hands-on activities. There will be photos and maps as well as mini activities for children\, including colourizing black and white historic photos and matching wooden block puzzle pieces to complete historic landmarks. Members of the Heritage Commission and the Friends of the Richmond Archives will be on hand to share some fun and fascinating history facts for all ages. \nThe Richmond Heritage Commission has six members appointed by City Council. The Commission provides advice to Council on heritage conservation and undertakes and supports activities that benefit heritage in Richmond. The Friends of the Richmond Archives support the work of the City of Richmond Archives and promote the preservation and understanding of Richmond’s history.

SUMMARY:What's in the Pot? A Celebration of Salt Spring Island's Farming Tradition
DESCRIPTION:An open invitation to the people of Salt Spring Island and beyond to learn about the impact of agriculture on our island’s history and traditions\, to discover the forgotten stories of the various people\, families and communities\, their amazing food harvests\, and to discuss contemporary food security\, who we are and where we come from. \nIn recognition of this year’s theme Stir the Pot\, we invite islanders and visitors to find out What’s in the Pot?  and explore what they know about the history of production of food on Salt Spring Island. What’s in the Pot? seeks to fill some of the gaps in local knowledge and identity. \nThe event will be held daily from 11am to 3pm\, from Monday\, February 16 to Sunday\, February 22 at the Salt Spring Museum on the grounds of the Salt Spring Island Farmers’ Institute on Rainbow Road. Email lowermainlandcurators@gmail.com to RSVP. \n\nLearn from three presentations that explore the importance of food as cultural heritage!\nPresentations followed by a Q&A session\n\nAbout the Presentations \nCurating FOODWAYS and Hong Wo同和\nZoë Chan\, FOODWAYS (Curator) and Mawenzhu Abbi Shi\, Hong Wo同和  (Curator)\nRichmond Art Gallery \nZoë Chan and Mawenzhu Abbi Shi will discuss the development of the exhibitions FOODWAYS presented at Richmond Art Gallery in tandem with the pop-up exhibition Hong Wo同和 at the City of Richmond Archives in 2024. These exhibitions reflected on how food and its diverse associated rituals\, traditions\, and social interactions shape individual and collective experiences of identity\, labour\, place\, and community. Bringing the two projects into conversation\, the presentation will explore their curatorial approaches while working with contemporary artworks and archival materials. \nItadakimasu (いただきます)\nBeyond food\, fun\, and festivals at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre\nSherri Shinobu Kajiwara (Director|Curator)\nNikkei National Museum \nItadakimasu is said before eating in Japan. While it literally means “I humbly receive\,” it’s really about gratitude—toward the food itself and toward all the people who played a role in bringing the meal to the table\, from farmers to cooks. \nKajiwara speaks to the value of food as a bridge to Nikkei history and Japanese culture. The upcoming exhibition at the NNM from March – Sept 2026 is curated by the Powell Street Festival former director Emiko Morita on 50 years of the festival at which Japanese street and Nikkei heritage foods feature prominently\, but let’s dive into food heritage at the NNM beyond food\, fun\, and festivals. \nCreating Space in the Kitchen\nJane Lemke\, delecTABLE: Burnaby Food Journeys (Curator)\nBurnaby Village Museum \nJane Lemke (BVM Curator) presents on the feature exhibit delecTABLE: Burnaby Food Journeys\, on now at Burnaby Village Museum and how the exhibit uses food to promote cross-cultural understanding. \nAbout Lower Mainland Curators Group \nThe Lower Mainland Curators Group (LMCG) is for anyone with an interest in curatorial work\, ideas\, or themes in British Columbia. \nThe group is coordinated by a team of volunteer organizing members from museums around Metro Vancouver to discuss topics or themes related to curatorial work. SUMMARY:What's in the Pot? A Celebration of Salt Spring Island's Farming Tradition
DESCRIPTION:An open invitation to the people of Salt Spring Island and beyond to learn about the impact of agriculture on our island’s history and traditions\, to discover the forgotten stories of the various people\, families and communities\, their amazing food harvests\, and to discuss contemporary food security\, who we are and where we come from. \nIn recognition of this year’s theme Stir the Pot\, we invite islanders and visitors to find out What’s in the Pot?  and explore what they know about the history of production of food on Salt Spring Island. What’s in the Pot? seeks to fill some of the gaps in local knowledge and identity. \nThe event will be held daily from 11am to 3pm\, from Monday\, February 16 to Sunday\, February 22 at the Salt Spring Museum on the grounds of the Salt Spring Island Farmers’ Institute on Rainbow Road.
