SUMMARY:Black Heritage Celebration & Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Calling Sooke residents\, Black individuals and families with roots in African\, Caribbean\, Latin American\, and other diasporic communities – Join us for a week-long celebration of Black Heritage in Sooke\, aligned with BC Heritage Week and Black History Month. \nThe theme of BC Heritage Week 2026\, “Stir the Pot\,” aligns powerfully with theme of Black History Month\, “Out of Many Cultures\, One People\,” by celebrating the richness that emerges when diverse food traditions\, stories\, cultures\, and voices come together. \nThroughout the week\, the program will highlight the lived experiences of being Black in Sooke through food\, music\, dance\, storytelling\, and cultural traditions\, while creating a welcoming space for dialogue around Black identity\, community connection\, and the ongoing fight against racism. Ultimately\, the Sooke Black Heritage Week seeks to strengthen community life by valuing diversity and fostering collective action toward greater understanding\, equity\, and social cohesion. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday\, February 16 (Family Day) | 11am – 3pm\n\n\nBlack Heritage Celebration & Potluck\nCultural food sharing\, slideshow\, music\, children’s activities\, and community resources booths. Families will bring dishes representing their countries of origin. Please share ingredients\, recipes\, and the stories behind each dish in advance through the event registration form. | Free   REGISTER HERE \nTuesday\, February 17 | 6:30 – 7:30pm\nFinancial Literacy Workshop\nBuilding Generational Wealth: Honouring Our Past\, Investing in Our Future – Led by Busola Fagbebe. Participants will gain practical insights into financial literacy\, wealth-building strategies\, and legacy planning\, while reflecting on historical barriers and modern opportunities. The workshop will create an open and supportive space for learning\, dialogue\, and empowerment\, encouraging participants to build confidence in managing finances and to explore pathways toward economic independence and long-term prosperity. | $10   REGISTER HERE \nWednesday\, February 18 | 6:30 – 7:30pm\nAfro-Brazilian Dance\nExplore the rich rhythms and movements of Afro-Brazilian dances led by Carla Belas. Participants will be guided through dynamic dance routines that celebrate cultural heritage\, storytelling through movement\, and the joy of community expression. No prior experience is required—open to all ages and skill levels. | $10  REGISTER HERE \nSaturday\, February 21 | 6:30 – 8pm\nPoetry Night\nOpen mic with featured reading by local author Fatima-Ayan Malika Hirsi: a space for expression\, connection\, and storytelling. Come share stories and creativity through poetry\, spoken word\, and personal reflections. This celebratory evening offers a welcoming space for expression\, connection\, and storytelling\, highlighting the diversity and richness of Black experiences in Sooke. This workshop for kids and parents offers a fun\, hands-on experience where children can learn about the art\, history\, and cultural significance of Black hairstyling.
