Fort Victoria Site – Bastion Square, Victoria

This historic place is significant to the Francophone community for its association with the Hudson’s Bay Company. Originally built in 1843 as a fur trading post, many Fort Victoria employees were Francophone. This is a result of the merger of Hudson’s Bay Company with the Northwest Company, when many of the coureurs des bois (also known as “Voyageurs”) were recruited by the HBC to continue as traders at posts throughout British Columbia.
