This place is valued by the Francophone community for its association with French Canadian brothers Jean and Francis Xavier Voutraine, two Hudson Bay Company trappers who paddled to the shoreline from the Saanich Peninsula to hunt and fish here until the 1850s. The brothers are credited with founding the community of new settlers.
