New Brighton Park and New Brighton Hotel, Vancouver

While none of the historic structures remain on the property, this park is located in north east Vancouver, on Burrard Inlet. The property is significant to the Francophone community because of its association with Maximilien Michaud, who once owned the hotel on the site.
“Maxie” Michaud was a renowned Vancouver character, who became famous for having crossed the country from Montreal in 1869 on foot and by canoe. He purchased the New Brighton Hotel from its original owner and renamed it Hasting’s Hotel, also known as “Maxie’s”. Michaud is credited as being the first postmaster in Vancouver, running the post office from the kitchen on his hotel.
