This area is valued for its association with Elias John Newton. Newton was of French Canadian origin, and it is thought that his family name was originally Villeneuve.
In 1890, Newton received a crown land grant, for a total of 160 acres of land comprising the area between 72 and 76 roads and 124 and 128 Streets. He raised his family, ran businesses associated with construction and was active in the campaigns of various political figures, including Premier William McBride.
