Rossland Mine Lands

The Rossland Mine buildings are all gone but there is still evidence of their foundations. The site included all associated infrastructure related to underground gold mines including head frames, storage buildings, railways, and tailings piles etc.

Non-Indigenous prospectors were successful in finding gold on Red Mountain in 1890. They struck claims immediately, and mining began soon afterwards. By 1897, the mining camp on Red Mountain spurred the incorporation of the City of Rossland.

The mining conglomerate of the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Company of Canada officially closed the Red Mountain site in 1929. But smaller operators continued to look for gold for many years afterwards. In the mid 1960s, an above ground operation on the other side of Red Mountain began extracting Molybdenum until the 1980s.
