Webinar: The Reality of Inclusion when Collaborating and Partnering with Indigenous Neighbours
About the Webinar:
In this webinar, Elena Zysblat and Janice Alpine tell the story of how they worked as partners to co-author and present a document in the settler community of Fernie for the Fernie Heritage Strategy. They discuss why the partnership was successful. This discussion covers the willingness to work in discomfort, working as partners as opposed to simply engaging Indigenous consultation, using Indigenous tools, the importance of consensual language and more.
About the Presenters:
Elana Zysblat is a heritage consultant based in Vancouver. Since 2012, Elana’s practice as an independent heritage consultant has reached all areas of BC. Her firm’s work provides heritage conservation consulting services, and support, education, training and workshops for local governments including indigenous communities and heritage commissions. Elana is the current President of the BC Chapter board of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals and is a director on the Friends of the Vancouver City Archives board.
Janice Alpine is the Business Development Officer/Tourism Engagement for the Ktunaxa Nation Council with the Kootenay Aboriginal Business Development Agency. She was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Awarded through Community Future’s BC 2015. Her volunteering includes Manager for Ktunaxa Nation Dance Troupe, and sitting on many boards and committees including: Cranbrook Tourism, Qat̓muk Steering Committee and more.
