Heritage Week Walking Tour | Water, Muck, and Trains: The shrinking shoreline of False Creek

February 24 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Event Series Event Series (See All)
$30

Get your walking shoes ready and join Vancouver Heritage Foundation on February 24th to celebrate Heritage Week with John Atkin! Come learn something new about the many “layers” of the place you call home.

Join us for a Heritage Week walking tour that will dig deeper into Vancouver’s history community’s and explore the many layers and stories that False Creek holds! Non-native settlement has continuously reshaped the landscape of what we call Vancouver. From industrial development, railway infrastructure and world’s fairs the shoreline of False Creek has been repeatedly shaped, reshaped, cut and filled so that it is 15 times smaller than its original size.

*Please note the morning and afternoon tours will have the same starting location but cover a different route and address different aspects of False Creek’s history. There will be some overlap in content related to the Great Northern Railway, which had its original station in Chinatown.

The 10 AM tour will focus on the CPR and the early industries, such as the saw mill, which led to the development of Chinatown. It will end at the Chinatown Memorial at Keefer St and Columbia St.

The 1 PM tour will focus on the gas works, the old Georgia Viaduct and the filling of the eastern basin for the GNR and CNR stations. It will end at Main St and Terminal Ave.

Tickets are limited and the tours will take place rain or shine.
