The Museum Director and Curator at the Italian Cultural Centre Gallery is hosting an open house where she will greet visitors and give tours of the new exhibition By the Light and Dark of the Moon: The Tapestries of Ruth Jones. This open house will take place during the last 3 days of Heritage Week (21-23 of February, 2025 from 10 am to 5pm).
This exhibition features the painting and tapestry work of Ruth Jones, a tapestry weaver specializing in the French Aubusson weaving method, which was prominent in France and influenced Italian tapestry weaving during the late Middle Ages and Renaissance period from the 14 Century to the 19th centuries. As a master of the Aubusson technique Ruth Jones utilizes a special 7-foot loom which is close to the ground, she also weaves the pattern backwards. The finished piece is not viewed until it is removed from the loom. As a fine artist she draws, paints and designs the iconography and imagery of her tapestries.
Ruth Jones explores ancient themes such as the moon phases and how they affect the life cycle of humans, floral and fauna. She also questions how are current 24- hour work ethic affects our biological patterns and life. She utilizes ancient artistic symbols such as birds, millefiori flowers and ancient deities to draw attention to themes that are current and call into question our internet-driven social values.
The Artist Ruth Jones holds an MFA in studio art and an MFA from the Aubusson tapestry school in France. She is also known for her work on the monumental Unicorn tapestries at Stirling Castle in Scotland.
The Museum is open from 10am to 5pm on the 21, 22 and 23 of February to give tours during Heritage Week. Please join us.
