Advocate and Promote
BC Heritage Week is more than a celebration. It’s a powerful tool to raise awareness about the value of heritage in your community. From historic places and cultural traditions to family stories and local practices, heritage connects us to who we are and where we come from.
By advocating during BC Heritage Week, you demonstrate that heritage matters and that it deserves support year-round. By promoting your events and activities, you also bring awareness to value of heritage. Every poster you hang, every story you share, every proclamation you help inspire, and every event you host builds momentum for heritage.
Here are some ways to advocate for and promote BC Heritage Week in your community:

2. Ask Your Local Government to Proclaim it BC Heritage Week
Every year, the Province of BC and many municipalities issue proclamations declaring Heritage Week. These proclamations show that civic leaders value heritage and its role in our communities, and they help Heritage BC advocate for financial and political support. Use our Proclamation Template to ask your local government to join in.
3. Attend Events and Participate
From February 16–22, 2026, heritage and cultural organizations across BC will be hosting events and activities to celebrate Heritage Week. Bring your friends and family and take part in activities that connect you with local heritage. New events will be added regularly up until it’s go-time in February.
4. Host an Event or Activity
Organize your own Heritage Week activity. It could be a storytelling session, hands-on workshop, demonstration, or a local heritage tour. Hosting an event or activity is a great way to rally your community around heritage and show that it matters.
By taking action around BC Heritage Week, you’re helping build momentum and keeping BC’s heritage visible, valued, and vibrant.
