Kelowna: Heritage Driving Tour

The City of Kelowna was awarded $5,457 to updating their Heritage Driving Tour brochure.  The revised version will be in full colour, with lots of new information.  The tour covers the City’s most significant heritage resources which include buildings, heritage sites, and historic neighbourhoods.

Delta Heritage Passport

A grant of $3,267 was approved for the Corporation of Delta to assist with production costs for Delta Heritage Passport:  Volume II, part of a guide series to the historic regions of the District.  The second volume will focus on the Annieville, Sunbury and Kennedy areas of this agricultural and industrial community.  The first volume of the Passport won a Heritage BC Outstanding Achievement Award for the Delta Heritage Advisory Commission in 2008.

North Pacific Cannery

The Port Edward Historical Society manages the North Pacific Cannery, designated a National Historic Site in 1987.  A grant of $10,000, the maximum under the Awareness Program, will be a substantial contribution toward a $35,000 budget to research, develop, fabricate and install a set of interpretive sign panels.

Victoria Inner Harbour

The first Conservation grant was awarded to the City of Victoria, which will receive $25,000, the program maximum, to reproduce a number of ornamental street lights on Victoria’s Inner Harbour.  An unusual request, the project was supported because the lights were considered important missing elements in the Inner Harbour district, identified by the capital city as one of their most important historic precincts.

Stanley Park Hollow Tree

Another maximum grant of $25,000 went to the recently-formed Stanley Park Hollow Tree Conservation Society in Vancouver.  The group is dedicated to saving the iconic tree which was condemned by the Park Board last year, despite its listing on the Vancouver Heritage Register.

Holy Family Catholic Church, Fernie

The Holy Family Catholic Church in Fernie received a $25,000 grant.  The stewards of this prominent historic landmark have developed a four-stage Conservation Plan, and Phase I, dealing with the interior, was completed four years ago.  Phase two, the subject of the current grant, involves replacing the roof.
