Who Benefits?

Applications come from many sources, including not for profits such as community museums and heritage societies, as well as local governments and First Nations.

Beyond the applicants themselves, it is the community and the local economy that benefit from the financial support of the Heritage Legacy Fund. Heritage BC aims to conserve heritage resources, both tangible and intangible, through this endowment fund, but also encourages communities to understand and appreciate our heritage, to bolster tourism and economic well-being, and to foster more sustainable, equitable communities. More information on the economic impact of heritage conservation can be found here.

We have learned that communities need support to ensure heritage conservation in British Columbia and not just with the upkeep and restoration of historical sites, but also to build capacity within communities around education, organizational development, reconciliation, values-based community consultation and promotion of best practices in heritage.

As an organization of provincial scope, Heritage BC recognizes that its members, and the local history and heritage they seek to preserve, occupy the lands and territories of B.C.’s Indigenous peoples. Heritage BC asks its members and everyone working in the heritage sector to reflect on the places where they reside and work, and to respect the diversity of cultures and experiences that form the richness of our provincial heritage.
