A Guide to Making a Case for Heritage

When we make a case for heritage, we describe the value of heritage, our work and the sector itself. We also convey the significance of heritage to those of influence, as well as to our communities.

Making a case is challenging and not always well understood. Information is often missing and acquiring the statistics requires forethought, research, and analysis. Unavailable measuring systems, lack of personnel, and insufficient funds are other factors that prevent proper data collection.

Part 1: An Approach to Developing and Communicating Your Case for Heritage

We developed this guide to give you the tools and framework to stand out and make an impact when communicating the value heritage to your community.

Part 2: Statistics, Information and Tools

This guide provides a framework, data, and activities to help you make your case for heritage. While the information provided is not exhaustive, we hope you will find it actionable and aspirational. Not everything will be relevant to your situation, so please select the sections and activities that are most suited to your needs.

Please contact us if you have questions, comments, or ideas to share.

As an organization of provincial scope, Heritage BC recognizes that its members, and the local history and heritage they seek to preserve, occupy the lands and territories of B.C.’s Indigenous peoples. Heritage BC asks its members and everyone working in the heritage sector to reflect on the places where they reside and work, and to respect the diversity of cultures and experiences that form the richness of our provincial heritage.
